One Room Challenge: Week 5, The Design Plan

I can’t believe we are in Week 5 of the One Room Challenge! Just one more week before the final reveal. This week, I am excited to share with you the final design plan for the “Community Room”! It’s been four weeks since we launched David & Nicole’s design project. So far our design team has since presented their family with; a mood board, floor plan and now the design plan.

In our, signature five step design process at Gray Space, the Design Presentation - Step 2, is often the hallmark of the project. For several weeks, our team works behind the scenes to curate, edit, revise and curate again… to create the best design plan for your home.

As we navigate this step, we often start with a floor plan (click here to read all about it in Week 2’s blog post) and present it very early in the process. Next we craft a mood board to ensure we are headed in the right design direction. Lastly, we pull together the feedback shared and all of the design clues learned along the way to create the final design plan.

We discovered from David & Nicole’s design client questionnaire, that their style is contemporary and that the space should feel luxurious, well-traveled, and functional.

In designing a space I often start with an area rug, a piece of art or the largest item in the room. In this project I started with the latter. The fireplace wall standing at 10 feet wide and 9 feet tall, is the largest item in the room and has a great impact on the space. Considering the color pallet selected; a moody mix of grays, taupes and merlot… based on David & Nicole’s wedding colors, I landed on a beautiful slab of marble called Fantasy Brown. It’s the perfect blend of pewter, apricot and chestnut tones and plus what’s more luxurious then marble?!? He’s a view of the slab… It’s beautiful!

Now on to furniture, when I think of well-traveled and contemporary there are a handful of furniture manufactures that come to mind including; Bernhardt, Noir Furniture, Four Hands to name a few. So I started our furniture and decor search with those companies in mind.

While searching online, the first furniture piece that caught my eye and heart was the Linea Entertainment Console by Bernhardt . It’s black forest marble finish reminds me of the mountain views throughout the Delaire Graff Estate, our source of inspiration for this project. I decided that we would partner with our carpenter and plumber to transition this piece into a wet bar. I love adding custom features like this to our client’s spaces.

Next, I wanted to tap more into the color pallet selected for the project, I gasped when I came across the amazing Astrid chair by Sunpan. It’s bold in size at 38” wide and bold in shape with it’s curved barrel back and channel tufted seating that almost hugs you when you sit in it. It’s also bold in color with a velvet merlot fabric and warm brass frame.

There are so many pieces that I love in this space, but I’ll highlight just one more… the wine cellar’s chandelier. This was one of the first pieces I selected. I saw this chandelier in person during my last visit to High Point Market in the Noir Furniture showroom… and it’s stunning. It’s called the Satellite Chandelier and was the perfect edition to this area of the community room. The glass paillettes shine in a way that brings a classic elegance to the space.

After selecting all furniture pieces I had to bring the design plan home with a paint color. For this project, we are partnering with Sherwin Williams. A company I know and love. Considering all of the colors in this space, I decided on one of my favorite colors Mink by Sherwin Williams. This warm gray has a hint of a purple undertones which inherently feels luxurious as we often associate purple with the color or royalty, and I want to ensure that David & Nicole feel as such, in their new space. This community room is filled with many special furniture pieces and when all placed together, it creates the most harmonious, luxurious retreat.

Now without further ado, I am excited to share our final design plan for the Virtualson’s “Community Room”!

Let me know what your thoughts? Could you see yourself entertaining with family and friends here? What’s your favorite furniture piece?
