One Room Challenge: Week 3, The Mood Board

THE MOOD:

As I curate the mood board for our clients and type this blog post, I am sitting on my sofa with a glass of a full-bodied cabernet. The overhead lights are dim and there’s smooth jazz tunes playing in the background. “Alexa play smooth jazz”. No this isn’t a romance novel… ha-ha! I am working on setting the mood that I want our clients to experience in their newly designed “community room”.

We have now jumped headfirst into the next phase of the Gray Space design process, Design Development. This phase generally consists of three segments; floor planning, a mood board and a design board. Each of these tools enables our team to easily communicate the design vision with our clients, while gaining their approval along the way. It allows our client to clearly understand the design plan and ultimately the process becomes efficient and seamless.

The floor plan, highlighted in last week’s blog post, helps our team and our clients to understand the room’s flow and functionality and it identifies the exact furniture pieces and the sizes, needed for the project. It’s the outline of the room.

The next segment, the “mood board” allows our design team to color in the lines a bit and unleash our creativity. This is where we communicate the “mood” or vibe of the space to the client. A mood board is a visual representation of the design plan. It’s a collection of images that illustrate the intention of the room.

After analyzing our client’s questionnaire, gathering “design clues” from our consultation and subsequent conversations and more, the mood for David and Nicole’s entertaining space affectionately known as the “community room” is; luxurious, well-traveled, and functional. I want to embrace the hobbies and lifestyle of David & Nicole, while giving them a space that feels like a retreat. A home away from home, an escape from the everyday… and the best part.. it’s here right where they are… Home!

This mood board embodies serenity, texture, their wedding colors of red, black and white and is infused with global influences, including the vacation destination Delaire Graff Estate in the Cape Winelands of South Africa. What do you think? Would you want to entertain in this space?!?
