One Room Challenge – Spring 2021, Week 3: The Mood Board

The room is selected and the inspiration is set! We are now in week three of the One Room Challenge and I am so excited to have you all get a sneak peek into my mood boards!  In Phase 2 of our design development process we occasionally present a mood board to the client with design styles and pieces that we believe fit their taste based on their questionnaire.   The reason we choose to start with a mood board first over a full on design is to make sure that we are on track with the clients design wishes. It will also save the client and us time on revisions once the design is created since we base pieces off of the mood board approval.

So since I am my own client I’ve taken the next step in creating the mood board for our space. I’ve expressed in my last blog post that I really wanted an oasis and how the colors and vibe of the sunset was going to be a major inspiration for the overall theme of the space. Before I get to ordering I want to really look at my inspiration selections to make sure that I am ready to commit to the pieces, finishes, and colors that I plan to incorporate in my space.

Bedroom Mood Board: Here it is!  I’m having all the feels as the colors and pieces flow together on the board. It is also amazing to see how much my design style has evolved over the years. So visualize the sunset with me, now pull in the warm browns, golds, and that russet burgundy. The fireplace that I’m flirting with for my bedroom will add in cream and gold accents to compliment the space and versatility in the color scheme. While there are inspirational rooms in my mood board, there are a few images of furniture that I have had my eyes set on for quite a while; the bed and accent chair.

Both pieces are by Apt 2 B ! I feel in love with the Everette Bed and Catalina Chair because of their clean and contemporary lines and timeless style. As a designer I find that my design style changes quickly and I believe that the style of these pieces will stand the test of time. Both the color and the profile of the Everette Bed and Catalina Chair work with my husband and I esthetic.

Bathroom Mood Board: Not sure about you... but when I look at this board the first thing my eyes float to is the tub. I mentioned previously that the shower was my least favorite part of my bathroom so when I say this tub is about to be a blessing, I’m truly saying that I have a feeling I will be spending a lot of time in the bathroom. For the overall feel of the bathroom, I would like a very clean, open and bright space… quite the opposite of the moody bedroom… and the marble tile that will fill the floors and the walls will help to achieve that. I am also bringing the black and white mentioned in my last blog post that runs throughout our home, into this space with white walls and black matte hardware finishes. I am excited and can’t wait to show you how it will all be incorporated into the room.

Designer Tip: When planning mood boards, instead of focusing on the actual pieces… focus on things like color templates, material textures, hardware finishes, and possibly an art piece that can tie it all together. The mood board is the time to select key elements that will play as a theme or baseline for the design.

Ok that's all for this week! See you next week as I share our Design & Floor Plan plans during our Design Development phase.
