One Room Challenge: Week 1, The Intro

It’s Launch Day! The Fall 2020 One Room Challenge starts today, and I am thrilled and honored to be one of the 20 featured designers for this round. A dream come true!

OVERVIEW:

Like most of 2020 (what a year huh?) … This season’s challenge comes with a twist! :-) This is the eighteenth season of the ORC and for the first time it is VIRTUAL (for featured designers). Also, this time around the #oneroomchallenge has partnered with High Point Market! Double the fun.  In summary, I get to create a virtual room, for a virtual client using products sourced from the “furniture mecca” High Point Market, the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. So exciting!

The Gray Space Team

INTRO:

Before we get too deep into the details of my plan for this season’s challenge, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. If this is your first time connecting with me, WELCOME! My name is Rasheeda Gray and I am the Founder & Principal of Gray Space Interiors, a full-service design firm based in Philadelphia. I am an interior designer who would define my design style as contemporary, fashion forward and personalized.  I am in love with texture and pattern, calming aesthetics and problem solving. I know… who loves problem solving? Charge it to my past corporate career and the fact that I am always up for a challenge! Click here to learn more about my background and our design team!

This is my second time participating in the ORC challenge. My first challenge happened last season (Spring, 2020), as a guest participant where I transformed not one, but two rooms: my living and dining room! It was an ambitious project, complete with an 11-foot custom fireplace. But I couldn’t shake the nagging desire to transform both spaces “someday” and I decided that the “someday” was now. If you are like me… 2020 has taught us all many things… and one of those lessons… is to never put off tomorrow what you can do today. So I tackled it head first and it was such a rewarding experience! You can read all about it here https://grayspaceinteriors.com/blog.

Transforming a space in my own home, reminded me of why I do this work for our design clients. Now, when I walk through the doors of my home each day, heavy with the responsibility of work, being a mom, a wife, etc., it brings me great joy and even peace to see our home fully designed, fully completed and fully me. It feels like a sanctuary and I love creating that same feeling for our clients!

So, in this edition of the One Room Challenge, I want to take you along with me through the design process! Over the next six weeks we will dive deep and pull back the curtain to show you what it’s like to work with an interior designer to create the home of your dreams!

THE CLIENTS:

My virtual clients are David & Nicole Virtualson. Ha Ha! Get it VIRTUAL-SON (my humor can be so corny)… I know. Nicole is a doctor, specifically an OBGYN and David is an entrepreneur of a software engineering firm.

Nicole and David have two children, ages 10 and 13. As a family, they love to travel and because of quarantine - miss it dearly. They also like to entertain family and friends. They are looking to create a space in their home that will combine their love of both. Over the next six weeks, I will partner with Nicole and David to transform the lower level/basement family room of their 4,500 square foot home, into an entertainment retreat that is influenced by their love of travel.

Note: David and Nicole are loosely based on my real design clients and their home is a project that I am gearing up to start. So the timing of the virtual One Room Challenge is perfect ! We’ll design this space now and you will see it come to life in early, 2021. So stay tuned!

THE ONE ROOM CHALLENGE PLAN:

Each week I will share a blog post with a few fun social media posts in between!  Each blog post will cover one of the five steps in our design process and will include a Design Tip (or two, or three… lots of sharing here) covering everything from design budget, to space planning, design choices and more!

I hope that you join me! To follow along with the journey, click here to connect with me on Instagram and here for Facebook and turn on your post notifications to ensure you always get the latest posts! I am so excited to share all of details of the design journey, stretch my imagination on this project, connect with you guys and really share with you what it is like to work with an interior designer!
