Designing the Perfect Dorm Room: Partnership with Home Depot

Sending a child off to college is such a exciting experience. For me, one of the most enjoyable parts of this journey has been designing my son's dorm room. To help create a stylish and functional space for my son we've partnered with Home Depot and would love to share with you all a guide full of tips, ideas, and must-have essentials to help make this experience special.

First things first before diving into the design process, you should always take some time to measure your dorm room's dimensions or at least understand the layout. Make a rough sketch and mark essential areas like your bed, study space, storage, and any shared areas. Knowing your space will help you make informed decisions during the design process. Your second step in this process should be creating a mood board / coming up with a concept with inspiration, this is a very important step because mood boards ensure a well-thought-out and cohesive design while also helping you save time in the process.

One of the most important things I wanted to do in my son's dorm was make sure it felt warm and cozy almost like an extension of his room at home. His room at home has a very industrial vibe using lots of blacks, whites, and grays, so for his new dorm room, we wanted to transfer the same vibe.

Starting with the bed, because it is one of the largest focal points in the room we knew we needed to do something fun so we decided to peel and stick upholstered wall panels for the headboard.  These are a way of adding coziness to the space and creating another focal point throughout the room. The 2nd most important aspect of the bed is the actual bedding. We decided to go with a gray organic cotton duvet with gray pillows. You should always opt for soft, easy-to-wash sheets, cozy blankets, and comfortable pillows. Luckily, Home Depot has an array of bedding options in various colors and patterns to suit anyone's taste.

The Walls are another large part of the space and we wanted to do something fun while still being practical. We decided to go with peel-and-stick wallpaper in a brick pattern adding to the industrial vibe throughout the room.  To bring the room together we decided to use a large indoor/outdoor rug for the durability aspect. We know that the dorm will be a high-traffic area with friends coming in and out so having something durable on the ground will come in handy.

Every room and dorm room in particular needs easy and smart storage solutions. Home Depot helped us find this cubed storage unit with gray inserts which will be perfect for under his bed. We also decided to get him a large trunk/chest for even more storage in his room. It will be nice to have somewhere that you can just put your things in and close when things get cluttered.

Something important to think about when decorating a dorm room should be seating, other than the bed. We were lucky enough to find some awesome solutions like this super high-tech Bluetooth gaming chair which every college boy will most definitely fawn over.

Home Depot had everything we could think of from lamps, towels, storage bins, and led lights… to every appliance you would need. Thanks to home depot we were able to fully furnish and prepare my son's dorm room and we couldn't have been happier with the results. Remember the most important things when decorating a dorm is to stay organized, consider your personal style, and most importantly to get creative. Happy decorating!
